Container Refund Donations
Turn Your Bottles and Cans Into Hope for People Affected by Multiple System Atrophy.
Did you know that your empty drink containers could help support National MSA Research?
Through container refund schemes in Victoria and Tasmania, eligible bottles, cans and cartons can be returned for a 10-cent refund.
Instead of keeping your refund, you can choose to support a registered charity or community organisation.
It’s a simple way to combine recycling with charitable giving, helping reduce waste while supporting causes that matter.
At National MSA Research, we welcome opportunities to turn everyday actions into greater awareness of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).
Every Container Can Make a Difference
Multiple System Atrophy is a rare and progressive neurological condition that affects movement, coordination and important automatic bodily functions.
For patients and families, an MSA diagnosis can bring significant challenges and uncertainty.
National MSA Research was established to increase awareness of this condition, promote understanding and support the long-term advancement of scientific research.
Container refund donations offer one way for individuals, families and community groups to contribute towards these charitable objectives.
How Container Refund Schemes Work
Container refund schemes encourage people to return eligible drink containers for recycling.
In Victoria and Tasmania, each eligible container earns a refund of 10 cents.
Most eligible containers are between 150 mL and 3 litres and include certain plastic bottles, aluminium cans, glass bottles and drink cartons.
Look for the 10-cent refund marking as a general guide.
Not all drink containers qualify, so please check the relevant scheme’s eligibility information before returning them.
Once your containers are accepted at a participating refund point, you can choose from the available refund options, which may include donating your refund to a registered organisation.
Tasmania — Recycle Rewards
Tasmania’s container refund scheme is known as Recycle Rewards.
National MSA Research is listed as a participating Donation Partner under the campaign name Help Fight MSA.
Supporters in Tasmania can find National MSA Research in the Recycle Rewards donation partner directory or app.

Supporting MSA Awareness in Tasmania
The Help Fight MSA campaign focuses on raising awareness of Multiple System Atrophy.
Donated refunds are intended to support awareness activities, community engagement and the development of educational communications that help more people learn about MSA.
By participating, Tasmanian supporters can help strengthen public understanding of a condition that remains unfamiliar to many Australians.
Victoria — CDS Vic
Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, known as CDS Vic, allows eligible drink containers to be returned for a 10-cent refund.
The scheme operates through participating refund points across Victoria.
Registered charities and community organisations can receive donated refunds through the scheme’s Donation Partner arrangements.
How Charitable Donations Work in Victoria
Supporters can collect eligible containers and visit a participating CDS Vic refund point.
Where a charity is registered and activated with the relevant scheme operator, supporters may be able to direct their refund to that organisation through an app, Donation Partner ID or another supported method.
National MSA Research will publish its confirmed Victorian donation details once they have been verified for public use.
Until then, please contact us if you would like information about supporting our organisation through container refunds in Victoria.
Get Your Workplace or Community Involved
Container collection can also be a practical fundraising activity for workplaces, community groups and families.
You might consider:
- Collecting eligible drink containers at home.
- Encouraging colleagues to save eligible cans and bottles.
- Organising an approved community container collection activity.
- Collecting eligible containers after an event.
- Encouraging family and friends to participate.
If you are planning a public collection activity on behalf of National MSA Research, please contact us first to discuss appropriate arrangements.
Container collection activities must comply with applicable scheme rules, property permissions and safety requirements.
Recycling With a Purpose
Container refund schemes help encourage recycling and reduce the amount of drink-container waste entering the environment.
By choosing to donate your refund, you can combine this environmental benefit with support for a charitable cause.
We believe meaningful community contributions can begin with simple actions.
How Your Contribution Is Managed
Container refund donations received by National MSA Research are charitable funds.
They are recorded and managed in accordance with our charitable objectives and any applicable scheme or campaign conditions.
For example, donations received through the Tasmanian Help Fight MSA campaign are associated with the awareness purpose described in that campaign.
Funds will not be represented as allocated or paid to scientific research unless such allocations or payments have been separately approved and recorded.
We are committed to responsible financial management and accurate reporting.
Donation Receipts and Tax Information
The treatment of container refund donations may differ from ordinary charitable gifts made directly through our donation system.
A container refund donation does not automatically guarantee a tax-deductible receipt.
If you require information about receipts or the tax treatment of a particular contribution, please contact the relevant scheme operator or seek appropriate taxation advice.
Help Spread the Word
You can also support National MSA Research by telling others about container refund giving.
Share information with friends, family, colleagues and community groups who may be interested in supporting our mission through recycling.
Please use confirmed National MSA Research donation details when directing refunds so that contributions reach the intended organisation.
Small Actions. A Shared Mission.
Every eligible container returned represents an opportunity to recycle responsibly.
When supporters choose to direct their refunds towards National MSA Research, those everyday actions can also contribute to greater awareness of Multiple System Atrophy.
We are grateful to everyone who finds meaningful ways to support our mission.
